Buckwallow Cycling Center

Just off the well traveled Hwy 11 outside of Gravenhurst is a beaten path of Canadian Shield that is a must visit on your mountain biking trail circuit this year.

To start with, google searches turned up little in the way of good directions so here’s the proper GPS coordinate map.

The cycling center has everything you would expect in a privately owned “for pay” trail system; ample parking, the cleanest outhouse I’ve ever seen, a bike cleaning station, and a very friendly staff. Your $8/day gets you well drawn tail map with trail names and difficulty rating for each. Trails are rated from 1 to 5 “paws” with 5 being the most difficult.

The 16+ individual trails are linked by a well groomed double track logging type road and are well marked with their names and difficulty rating as you enter. If you’re anything but a beginner rider and not shy to try the 5 paws you can almost link all 16+ trails together and stay single track the whole way around.

Riding at Buckwallow can only be described as “extremely fun”. There’s a great mix of fast flowing hard pack and lots of rock to maneuver around. The trail builder clearly knows the land and has even integrated burmed turns out of natural rock formations. If you typically don’t ride with this much exposed rock around you, forcing you to see your line and take it with confidence and speed, which was my case, you’ll leave the trails a better rider than when you started.

Although the 3 hour drive from Kitchener is a long one, I have no doubt I’ll make it at least once more this season.
